#BlackLivesMatter, #TransLivesMatter

We are taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming this week to respond to current events and unpack our thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement as well as JK Rowling’s transphobic twitter tirade. In the second half of the show, we discuss some YA book recommendations to uplift voices of BIPOC as well as LGBTQ+ people. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some of our personal favorites. We are not experts, but we want to do what we can with our privilege to be better allies.

If you don’t think this show is for you, please consider listening with an open mind. Our regularly scheduled program will resume in a week, but there are more important issues that need to be addressed now.

Please consider donating to Equal Justice Initiative at eji.org. We have reached our matching goal at this time but would love to continue raising funds as a Real Weird family for this important cause. Send us a screenshot (realweirdsisters@gmail.com) if you donate so we can record your contribution.

Thank you both so much for the stance you are taking and for saying this.

It’s been really hard for a lot of us who have grown up loving this series so much to reconcile the person we thought JK Rowling was with who she actually is. I’ve grown up wishing I could meet her someday and now I feel like the curtains been pulled back from Oz. I’ve been trying to figure out how to process it myself, as I write Harry Potter fan-fiction. Now I just feel sick to my stomach every time I think about trying to write anything related to Harry Potter.

I think taking a step back as we process and try to separate the art from the artist is the best thing we can do while we try to be good allies.

I was curious about this episode since this topic made headlines. I got preview from your Glee Sorting Hat but I’m glad that you delved into it further. It was a hard show to get through but you girls did a great job getting your message out.
