7.11 The Bribe

An extremely aged Lupin, bearing a strong resemblance to Jacob Marley, shows up at Grimmauld Place to inform the trio of the Death Eaters outside, propose a tempting plan, and drop some very surprising news about Tonks. Harry tries out the name “Remus,” and it’s about as cool as Remus’s insistence on referring to Snape as “Severus.” Though the title of this chapter may be a bit off, at least the chapter art makes up for it!

Wow, Martha showing some empathy with Remus and not just making fun of the poor guy?! It is a special day.
Not going to delve into what a walking tragedy the dude’s life has been, but Lupin is clearly an absolute wreck by this point in the story, having had so much taken away from him repeatedly. He has lived with self-loathing almost all his life. Once he left Hogwarts and faced society, he was always going to be this way even if there was no war and the others all could have led happy lives. You cannot slap someone out of depression. So saying he needs to snap out of it and just get some tough love is sort of insensitive. I say this as someone who lives with bouts of those dark moments.

Harry was right in refusing to allow him to join them. He was wrong in how he went about it. Your analysis of that bit is far too dependent on the knowledge of how Remus reacts to it all in the end. It might have made him run away further, that is how extreme it is. Lupin is totally a Gryffindor and in no way a coward. He is someone who has had to be brave for far too long.

Enjoy the podcast, love your chemistry. Just thought I should drop this message as Remus Lupin is a really important character in this series for people who live with mental health issues.

This is the first time that I wanted a Book Club episode because although Remus was the MVP of Book 3, he has certainly fell from grace in this chapter and I understand why he never got much sympathy in previous episodes. I’m biased towards Remus as a character because of the fanfiction that I’ve read, but this chapter really makes him out as a pitiful shadow of his former self.

But then I read the first line of the comment above and decided that I just needed to dive in.

Usually HP chapter titles are pretty spot on but this one was a bit confusing. What was the bribe? Remus trying to sweet talk his way into the trio by offering his skill? Umbridge not ticketing Dung for handing over the locket? It looks like Martha agreed that it was the Dung thing and so does the HP Lexicon.

The Muggle-born Registry is so, so sad. Lol, Hermione is Ron’s… friend…

Thanks for the Remus sympathy and empathy. The author of the Remus and Tonks fanfiction that I adore wrote a AU drabble where Remus wasn’t bitten by the werewolf and she put him in Ravenclaw.

Interesting comment regarding how the remaining Maurauders were stunted.

I refuse to believe that Andromeda and Ted was disgusted. It’s totally in his head.

Native American as in native to the United States? If Albus was around 150 when he died then maybe that photo was from 140 years ago. What’s a native American doing in Britain in the mid-1800s?

I love this new side of Kreacher, lol.
