5.16 In the Hog’s Head

Hermione gathers approximately 25 of her best friends for an informational meeting at the Hog’s Head, even though the Three Broomsticks probably would have been a safer bet (she’s got a LOT to learn). Fred and George order everyone butterbeers, and then weasel out of paying for them. And Harry finally has the opportunity to execute some of the lessons he’s been dreaming about. If you’re having trouble listening to this episode, we have a long, lethal-looking metal object that we can clean out your ears with!

I think that knowing who to place one’s trust and is a pretty big theme in this book. For example, none of the students initially believe that Voldemort has returned, because they don’t have any proof. They are expected to believe it simply because Dumbledore believes it. And Dumbledore believes it because Harry said so.

Think about that for a second. Believing something that somebody says, just because somebody else told them too. And it’s such an outrageous, mind-blowing claim to make in the first place. Realistically speaking, anybody would have trouble swallowing that.

And it’s the same thing for Marietta and Cho. Cho trusts Harry, and Marietta trusts Cho, but she doesn’t trust Harry just because Cho trusts him. It’s difficult to place trust in second and thirst hand sources that one doesn’t have any close connection to when you’re being asked to accept something that you consider out of this world.

I listened to the Geek Wars trivia podcast. Your opponents were the Huffle-est of Puffs!

Hermione has more patience with Kreacher than she does with Sirius. She probably wants him to act his age, even though his development was incredibly skewed courtesy of Azkaban.

Ever noticed that Dennis was too young to be present? He’s only in his second year.

I really don’t know why Zacharius is a Hufflepuff. I guess he falls into ‘the lot’.

It’s strange for the portraits to be gossiping about students.

I would have never have pegged the ‘thump’ line as your favourite.
