4.34 Priori Incantatem

Alice and Martha are once again thrilled to spend an hour and half breaking down a ten page chapter! In this episode, we discuss a wild alternate reality which, of course, involves the shrunken heads, delve into the backstory on why one Scholastic consistency editor may have been fired, and consider reasons for why the graveyard Portkey seems to function differently than other Portkeys in the series.

Could you do X-Men sorting hat please? If so that would be awesome!
If not that’s perfectly fine. Just an idea, I watched the first X-Men and X2 for the first time ever! If you do X-Men sorting could you please remember to do Cyclops/Scott and Nightcrawler/Kurt
please? I’m sure you are busy and you most likely will never read this comment but I really like your podcast and I just thought maybe. If you do read this have a good day/night:-)

Glad to hear the feedback from Chris. I had thought the same thing and meant to comment to the same effect. Thanks for addressing.

Discussing the sexism in the death eater movement was insightful.

I bumped on one thing when you were summarizing the article. When you talked about it, though, you referred to historical activities in the past and used past tense. It must have made sense with the context of the article you were referencing. But to clarify further, that stuff is happening in the present, too. Women are active in those movements in the present and those movements are still steeped in misogyny. I’m sure you weren’t trying to suggest otherwise, but it’s worth noting when some people mistakenly think racism isn’t a problem anymore.

Actually, I didn’t know much detail about the article topic, but when I was listening I thought, wait that can’t only be a thing of the past and did a little research. Which confirmed your point about sexism and women’s participation in death eaters. Really interesting to hear that point- I hadn’t considered it before. Thanks again for discussing. It was a good entry point to being more cognizant of the same dynamics in the real world.

Hi Ali! Thanks for the comment. We definitely did not mean to imply that the KKK or racism is a thing of the past. It is definitely horrifying how active so many hateful groups are today, and women are certainly still culpable. The next time this comes up on the show I will be sure to make that clear! I’m glad you found the conversation interesting and thank you for reaching out to clarify!

Thanks, Alice! I was sure that we were on the same page. Hopefully rws listeners are on that page, too!

My partner had the idea that in addition to tracking women / misogyny in the death eaters, it would be interesting to compare and contrast with women aurors and members of the order and if there’s sexism on that side.

It’s so cool that you guys did a survey. I remembered filling it out myself. I hope it helped! Wow, 15 mins of housekeeping. That’s quite the record.

There must have been Death Eaters that weren’t acknowledged. Otherwise Karkaroff would have thrown even more people under the bridge.

I love the Gryffindore talk! I haven’t even given houses much thought in the longest time.

I read about the James and Lily mistake on The Harry Potter Companion, who also quoted the interview. They talked about the two-way Portkey inconsistency as well. However, their theory was for Voldemort planned on using the Portkey to get into Hogwarts and attack it from the inside:

It’s possible that the Cup was pre-programmed to be a Portkey from the middle of the maze back to the outside, and when the “faithful Death Eater” altered it, all he could do was create an intermediary step (he could add a destination, but not alter the existing one). But one other theory I’ve seen is that the Portkey would have been designed this way deliberately to take Voldemort back to Hogwarts, along with his Death Eaters, to start his new reign of terror. The idea would certainly be Voldemort’s type of scheme, and also makes sense – after all, Hogwarts probably has protective spells that prevent someone from creating a Portkey in, similar to how you can’t Apparate in. But since the Portkey was created from within the Hogwarts grounds, he was able to program it to come back. (end quote)

The fifth book is my least favourite so I’m looking forward to exploring it with two fans who consider OotP as their favourites.
