In the fanfic that I’m reading, (Stray, by fernwithy), there’s a lot more exposition about why Sirius was frantic to talk about Karkaroff. Being in Azkaban he knew first hand what the former Death Eater would do to get what he wanted. I thought it was a good way of approaching the information that was planted as a red herring and to stall Harry from figuring out how to do the task.
