Totally agree that this is well done in both the book and movie as our and Harry’s first exposure to the wizarding world. The wonder is well captured.
Is it ever explained why the Potter’s had so much money to give to Harry? I don’t recall ever hearing what James or Lilly did professionally.
Hey Dave,
I think that James’ parents were really wealthy and probably left him a lot of their money. I don’t know that Lily and James had much time to earn their fortunes themselves, considering how young they were when they died. I could be wrong about this, though!
Ya, the books don’t tell us a lot about James and Lilly once they left Hogwarts. We know they were in the Order of the Phoenix, but that is about it.
Hi! I love the podcast and finally have a comment to post – it’s about Hagrid and the “official Hogwarts business”. I was surprised when you referred to Harry as the official business when they were at the leaky cauldron because I always assumed the business was retrieving the stone! If it was about showing Harry around, I’m pretty sure Hagrid would have had a drink. Or two. Or a dozen. He is a half giant, after all. Listening to your podcast was the only time it even occurred to me that Harry himself was official business. I suppose that could be.
I also thought that Hagrid refers to the stone as “the you know what” not because he is trying impress Harry, but because telling us what was in the vault would ruin the suspense. JK Rowling had to conceal that detail from the readers and Hagrid was the device in this case, but I believe that if it was up to Hagrid he would not be so secretive. He is known for saying too much…
Can’t wait to listen to chapter 6! 🙂
“I was surprised when you referred to Harry as the official business when they were at the leaky cauldron because I always assumed the business was retrieving the stone!”
I always assume this as well.
“I also thought that Hagrid refers to the stone as “the you know what” not because he is trying impress Harry, but because telling us what was in the vault would ruin the suspense. ”
Both could be in play here.
It’s great to submersed in the wizarding world! To be fair, I didn’t catch on to the Diagon Alley play on words either until much later on.
One of you said that nuts might not be good on ice cream, but have you considered pistachios? I think pistachios would be amazing. You can already buy pistachio ice cream.
My father will hear about this podcast.
