– We know from the films that at least Snape has an oft campus residence. Trewalney seems to never leave. It seems that at least during the school year, all the teachers live at school.
– One thing that really is starting to annoy me is the complete lack of knowledge of anything Muggle related by some magical folks. I relate this to our real world equivalents of Amish. They choose to isolate themselves and shun being part of the modern world, but they are not ignorant of it.
– I do love how Hermione goes from annoying outsider to part of our trio. I agree that it was more from the fact that she covered Harry and Ron by lying. You rightly surmised that Harry has a “I have to save them/fix the problem” attitude that Voldemort is able to exploit later.

Spinner’s End, such an odd name for a residence.
Must be a British thing, none of my homes ever had names. But then again, my homes were only 10-25 years old.
I’m surprised that it took as long as it did for Hermione to join the trio. But it does make things even more meaningful.
McGonagal should have totally given the broom in private! The shape is kind of obvious… I’m sure that the teachers stayed in living quarters on site.
Girls, I am on the exact same Oliver Wood train as you! And I thought it was unlikely that Oliver didn’t know what basketball is too.

McGonagall might have ordered the Nimbus 2000 from Quality Quidditch Supplies and just had it delivered to Harry, kind of like how you can order things on Amazon to be delivered as a gift.
In regards to your comments about Oliver Wood not knowing about basketball, but then using golf balls later:
Golf was invented in Scotland, so Oliver Wood almost definitely already knows what golf is! I’m not Scottish, but I would think that the sport is probably so prevalent in Scottish culture, that even if he’s from an all-wizard family, he at least knows about golf even if he’s never played it. Or perhaps Oliver simply thought they looked about the same size as a Snitch, but a lot cheaper. Golf balls are probably super easy to buy from most muggle shops.
But as for basketball, while it’s popular/known among muggles in the UK, it’s more of an American sport, so a wizard in the UK may be less aware of it.
Interesting discussion about where the teachers live. What about the fact that they don’t have families?! Is this profession only for people who never get married or have children? It reminds me a bit of the servants in Downton Abbey and the expectation that those in “service” would put their own lives second to the lives of those they serve. Just getting started on this podcast. Been a fan since 1999 and love reliving the books with you two!
